Last Day of School

Today was a big day. There were 4 graduates and a boy who passed to next grade; a grade 9 grad, a grade 4 grad, a kindergarten grad, a graduation back into mainstream education and a boy who passed grade 2. Phew!

It was a joyous, sad, proud kind of last day. We arrived to school armed with a watermelon and pineapple party tray. The Kindies were having the fruit feast before releasing the butterflies they nurtured from "callepitters", my grade 2 troublemaker ensured the last day did not go unrewarded ~ a special phone call home from the vice Principal ~ sigh. (Spirited is what she called him and how I shall refer to him from now on.)

The grade 4 class celebrated with a pizza party & my grade 6 graduate finished his 2 year stint in a school specializing in advancing literacy skills. He rocked the program! Tearfully he is leaving a newfound group of friends that learn the same as he does, to return to his friends from a couple years ago. Tough day for him.
My grade 9 grad was offered the chance to enroll in the International Baccalaureate program in grade 10. Is there a genius in the house? Oh yeah!

I have the most amazing children. Reading their report cards, farewell wishes from friends and encouraging letters/cards from teachers today, I realized just how wonderful, caring and clever other people believe my Lovelies are, and they are so right! My heart is swollen and there is a lump in my throat, I may just be the proudest Momma on the block!

Love, love, love you Guys!

Until next time, I'm off to reward my Lovelies with an ice cream treat.

Lost in Thought

Isn't it funny how you sometimes look at an object and think back to when you bought it?
How at that time, 4 years ago, you'd never have thought you'd be using those discs to back up your new(ish) laptop. How you'd never have thought you'd be a single parent, how you never thought you'd be single, surviving and happy? How you're so damn glad things turned out the way they did? Pretty funny how life works out.
Until next time, I'm off to back up my very own laptop!

LP Guitar Clock

As you may or may not know, my youngest Daughter has Cystic Fibrosis. Every year on the last Sunday of May, we hold a charity fundraiser called Great Strides. Being on the Great Strides Committee is a rewarding role that I am proud of holding and a venture I am excited to continue. This year we added a live entertainment component to our family friendly event. Being the Entertainment Coordinator, I knew exactly who I wanted to play at our event this year, my friend and very successful Canadian Recording Artist, Craig Moritz. Fortunately for me, Craig was gracious enough to donate his time and exceptional talent to our cause & we were so very lucky to have him. I wanted him to know how grateful we were, so I decided to handcraft a thank you gift.
Craig has been working hard on getting his third album, Only When You're Lonely, out to eager fans. I am happy to report that his CD Release Party is happening this Friday in Edmonton, Alberta. (I am dying to get my hot little hands on a copy!) One of the songs I hope is on the new CD is one that I remember from my childhood, Danny's Song.  Re-recorded and released to radio by Craig, written and originally recorded by American Singer/Songwriter Kenny Loggins.
*note song #2, that's the song!
I found the LP, yep real vinyl, with the original song, in good condition on Ebay. With a picture of Craig's guitar in my mind's eye, I then went to work designing and perfecting a guitar shaped clock drawing. After many (many, many) tweaks to the design, I was ready to scale it to the size of the LP. Once I had the size right, I had to do some more tweaking to make the entire sketch work with the shape of the LP and the label in the middle.

I had purchased 2 practice LPs from my local thrift store because I was unsure of the method I was going to use to cut the vinyl. I tried out many different tips on the Dremel rotary tool and even bought a wood burning tool with a scalpel tip. These tools gouged out the fine lines in the practice rounds and I'm quite sure that smoldering vinyl is not the healthiest thing to be breathing in. I finally found a simple tip for the Dremel that left a fairly clean edge behind and was small enough to get into the smaller areas. Phew!
I was less than thrilled with the results. The finished product still seemed unbalanced, so back to the drawing board I went before the Kenny Loggins LP even came out of it's shipping package!
I traced my stencil onto paper and taped it to my kitchen window. From there I cut out pieces and rotated numbers until I loved it. Nervous as could be, I stencilled the vinyl and set about to cutting it out. The finished product was fabulous! I glued a clock movement box onto the back and cut out a guitar pick from the left over pieces, to use as a clock hanger.
The only thing left to do was to make the record sleeve into a box for the clock. I cut the spine off the sleeve and bent the cardboard to make a wider sleeve. I then used poster board to create a place to put the clock. Using foam floor mats, I cut out the rough shape of the clock to secure it inside the box.

If Craig likes the clock half as much as I loved making it, I'll be happy. I hope his CD gets worldwide recognition and his fan base multiplies exponentially this year. Not only is his voice like butter, but he is an amazing humanitarian and all round good guy! Best of luck Friday Craig ~ and Happy Birthday too!

Until next time, I'm off to wear out my first two Craig Moritz CDs.

Gluten Free Calgary ~ A Blogger's Reviews

My youngest Daughter, Little N, was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease, as a result of the initial screening for her, I had myself tested as well. My results came back negative for Celiac Disease but because of the severity of my symptoms, my Doctor concluded that I am Gluten Intolerant. This means that I need to avoid gluten as well although my diet doesn't need to be as strict as Little N's, still, for the sake of simplicity, we are following the same strict diet. I have started well ahead of her, as we were waiting on her to endure an endoscopy and we had to wait for pathology to process the results, and this way I should make fewer mistakes once she starts hers.

It turns out that eating Gluten Free comes with a Gigantic learning curve! (Who knew?) That stuff is in EVERYTHING! I was beginning to wonder if we would ever eat anything again. Label reading, however, is the key and knowing the terminology makes a world of difference.

I started this Gluten Free adventure approximately 5 weeks ago, May 12, 2011. Since then I have been perfecting my label reading skills (yay!), feeling better (double yay!) and trying out as many Gluten Free foods as I am able.

A friend and I decided to venture out for dinner to try a GF pizza at Boston Pizza. Being new at this whole super-sleuthing-the-wheat-code thing and desperately craving Perogy Pizza (To Die For Spiciness for all of you lucky enough to consume gluten consequence free), I ordered the GF crust with the perogy toppings. Shortly thereafter, the concerned Manager came over to our table to explain to me that what I ordered wasn't completely GFree, considering my topping choices. He showed me the menu again and pointed out the safe things for me to eat. He was such a doll, he never once made me feel silly for my mistake. I re-ordered my pizza and was pleasantly surprised at how "normal" the crust tasted when it arrived, the whole thing was delicious! (Boston Pizza uses Kinnikinnick brand GF pizza crust, I know because I asked.) The price was reasonable and the episode was downplayed & enjoyable. I was able to relax, enjoying myself instead of worrying if I was going to get sick later. The staff made all the difference in my first Gluten Free Dining Out experience, but the cuisine spoke for itself.
I highly recommend Boston Pizza's Gluten Free Pizza to anyone avoiding gluten. I will definitely be returning in the future on those must-have-pizza nights!

Until next time, I'm off to find more Gluten Free yumminess in Calgary's restaurants!

Great Granola Find ~ The Calgary Farmer's Market

Overcast and chilly, I spent the majority of my Saturday at home, online. It wasn't until 2:30 that I decided I had better make use of the daylight before I burned it all up doing nothing. I headed for Timmies to grab a coffee and there I ran into my dear friend and neighbor, Marie.

We decided to go check out the new Calgary Farmer's Market. What a Fantastic find!

The new location is at Heritage Drive and Blackfoot Trail S.E. Not knowing there was plenty of parking behind the building, (600 paved spots in fact) we parallel parked on the front street. Upon entering, I noticed it quite resembled the location at Currie Barracks except somehow nicer. The stalls and aisles are situated in the same formation and many, if not all, of the vendors are also the same.

Newly diagnosed with Gluten Intolerance, I thought many of the ready made food vendors would have no options for me. Boy was I wrong! Simple Simon Pies had a whole freezer worth of Gluten Free Products! They allow you to taste anything on their menu before you buy it. I left with 2 Gluten Free Chicken Curry with Mango Chutney Container Pies, a Gluten Free Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble and a Gluten Free Coconut Cheesecake. Marie even bought from the Gluten Free freezer, she loved it, now that's sayin' somethin', wow!

Our next stop was Innisfail growers Co-op where they had fresh spinach, asparagus, tomatoes and other goodies. They had preserves, flowers and tomato plants too! Marie bought asparagus and tomatoes and I bought a beautifully lush Tumbling Tom red tomato plant. This baby would have cost me easily $15 - $20 in a store but I got him for a smokin' deal, only $6.95. He already has teeny tomatoes growing and hundreds of buds ready to burst with delicious little tomatoes. Mmmm... yummy goodness.

Our last stop in the new market was an absolute favorite from the old market, Margarita’s Dishes. Who doesn't enjoy Ukrainian food? The cute-as-a-button fella behind the counter caught me eyeing up the forbidden food and was quick to assure me that the bratwurst, the sauerkraut and the mixed veggies were homemade and definitely Gluten Free. He dished me up and my grand total was $3.75. I gobbled up almost all of the mixed veggies (oh-so-good) before I thought to take a picture, shoot. Margarita's also carries fresh squeezed juices which I forgot to order, double shoot.

All in all, we had a fine afternoon looking, touching, smelling and sampling the fares at the new location of the Calgary Farmer's market. What a Great Granola Find indeed!

Until next time, I'm off to plant my tomatoes...
